  • Studies report that 50% of patients do not fully understand the advice of their physician. (Chodosh et al., 2005). Among those who do understand, few internalize and act upon the advice, such as the admonition to “eat less and exercise more” or even to take a given medication, with over 50% of medication prescriptions left unfilled (Sabate, 2003).

  • Patient-centered strategies help improve the outcomes for the most complex medical conditions that are expensive when poorly managed, but affordable when managed well.

  • Accountability is an important component that must not be overlooked when building self-efficacy, lasting behavioral change and celebrating a person’s efforts and progress.

Self-monitoring tools and these three simple questions are used when designing accountability:

    1. What are you going to do?

    2. When will you have it done?

    3. How will you be accountable?

  • Planning is the final stage in a four part model that begins with engaging, focusing and evoking. If and when a person decides to enter the planning stage - social support, past success and their reasons for change are designed into their plan of action.

Health Models

  • Focuses on the physical causes and symptoms of disease and other help problems.

  • Incorporates the interplay between biological, psychological and social well-being on health.

Processes of Change

  • Lasting change will occur only once a person is psychologically ready to truly change their lifestyle. This model acknowledges that behavioral change is a process that develops over time, with an individual progressing through the following stages of change:

    • Precontemplation

    • Contemplation

    • Preparation

    • Action

    • Maintenance

The coach’s role in this process is to set and maintain a positive tone that helps individuals recognize and rely on their own unique strengths and assets to be successful.

  • Coaching explores a person’s beliefs about their ability to be fit, eat healthy, and adhere to a program.

Self-efficacy is positively related to motivation (Bandura,1986).

Scaling questions are used to define confidence levels & to attempt to understand why a person feels the way they do.

  • Health coaching plays an important role in designing proactive strategies that overpower obstacles that may impede success.

    Potential Internal Obstacles:

    • Belief System

    • Self-Talk

    • Intentions

    • Unwanted Habits

    • Perceived Knowledge

Health Models

  • Focuses on the physical causes and symptoms of disease and other help problems.

  • Incorporates the interplay between biological, psychological and social well-being on health.

Skills & Methods

  • MI is a communication style that partners with a person to explore their ambivalence to adopt healthy lifestyle changes.

MI is often used to address addictions and manage physical health conditions that are related to hypokinetic conditions.

  • CBC is based on the notion that the way people think about a given situation determines how they feel emotionally and physically, and this alters their behavior.

Increasing awareness and reframing perspectives when the following internal barriers arise:

    • Labeling

    • Overgeneralizing

    • Personalization & Blame

    • All-or-Nothing Thinking

    • Jumping to Conclusions

    • Magnification & Minimization

Research supports that CBC improves emotional competencies, goal attainment, leadership skills, mental health, and overall quality of life (Green, Oades, & Grant, 2006; Grant, 2003; Conway, 2000, Laske, 1999)

  • Ultimately, the overall objective is to help a person choose to focus on their strengths, assets and possibilities for the future rather than weaknesses, deficits and what went wrong in the past.

  • A perspective that explores individual strengths and implements strategies to improve happiness and flow.

Positive psychology interventions have shown to significantly enhance well-being and alleviate depression (Sin & Lyubomirsky, 2009)
