    • Specific goals add structure and direct energy to manageable actions and tasks

    • Avoid setting overly general or unrealistic goals. These type of goals can demotivate and overwhelm people

    • Transforming large, life goals into a series of small, task-oriented goals provides a roadmap for success

    • Achieve your goals faster with agenda mapping, weekly goal attainment check-ins and a variety of on-going support tools

  • Accountability is the fundamental structure that keeps the conversation going and helps the coach and client have a mutual understanding, what goals the client agrees to start working on.

    This helps people stay-on-track as they plan and commit to taking action and in return, learn from the action they take, or don’t take.

    Inquiry Questions:

    • What are you going to do?

    • When will you have it done?

    • How will you be accountable?

  • The planning phase establishes new habits and routines, determines when and clients will begin these actions and envisions how these changes will fit into their life.

    The most effective behavior change strategies are stage-specific interventions that target the present mindset clients have as they progress from one stage to the next.

    • Precontemplation (not thinking about change)

    • Contemplation (weighing the pros and cons)

    • Preparation (getting ready to make a change)

    • Action (practicing the new behavior)

    • Maintenance (incorporating the new behavior)

    Those in preparation, action and maintenance have advanced to the planning and execution stage.
